Well, you can always depend on baidu.cn to serve up some Chinese characters, cheesecake, gore, and whathefuckery with every image. For some reason this round seemed particularly odd, and there were plenty of mouseover redirect entries that I had to screenshot to get an image. Fortunately, baidu serves the redirect image thumbnails as scaled versions of the originals. If the originals are big, then the thumbnails are also big — if you magnify the browser view to bring that size out. So I got decent-res screenshots of most of the redirects. The subject matter of the redirects was another matter — sometimes it made sense, sometimes it was wildly off. The winner in the WTF redirect probably goes to 190 圆 (round), which returned some odd valve thing, although 176 黑 (black) got the most unintentionally amusing return, with an iPhone knockoff.

The SEO award again goes to nipic, and oopic of course comes in strong with all the characters returned. The Overall WTF award for the day is split between the busty woman in a brassiere cleaning a man’s teeth for 9 这里 (here) and the animé ingenue getting done literally doggystyle for 186 坏 (bad), which I suppose is pretty apt, and funny.

Another Spanish up! For some reason google.es was exceptionally slow today, both in serving the GIS pages and also in loading the individual item window images.

No weird patterns or exceptionally amusing results this week, except for the excited girl with a fan of paper money for the image for “to hold”.

I have to thank the Russian Internet Swadesh List for being highly entertaining this time. Not only is it very different from last time, it also preferred serving actual images instead of boring clipart like some Internet Swadeshes I could mention. It also managed three image doubles, a “biting” baby, someone “fighting” a giant bug, someone “smelling” his underwear, and a helpful diagram on how not to “split” one’s legs with an axe. Finally, it has no less than three separate screenshots of Robert Downey, Jr. rolling his eyes.

Well played, Russian Internet Swadesh, well played.

Third English grid. Interestingly enough, dreamatico.com is losing its edge in dream-imagery SEO, and it’s now serving full-res images to GIS. In fact, I only had to do two screenshots for this whole set – one for a non-draggable preview, and one that had a Javascript blackout panel for mouseovers.

A second version of the Arabic grid up right here. Arabic image searches can be a little more gory than others, I’ve found, if not in the very first image, then the additional images returned.

Arabic also continues the trend of not returning color swatches or fields for the five color terms. The return for green (أخضر) is kinda swatchy but is more designy than anything.

A day late, alas, but no worries. Again, the Chinese Internet Swadesh gets some seriously odd returns. Lots of ooopic calligraphy again, and some nipic general images.

The most amusing thing about this Swadesh is that baidu.com must allow sites to pay for first-position search returns. If you see an image that looks like some weird industrial machine, or has a dark bar across the bottom, it’s one of those links. They always have a  mouse-over blackout script, and they never go to the usual baidu.com image search exploration page. I usually have to get a screenshot of the search page thumbnail to include them.

And this time the Chinese Swadesh almost matched the Russian Swadesh in color term returns. It used images instead of swatches in everything but white, but I think the three naked girls that came up for the “yellow” term (黃) puts this one over the edge.

A day late this round. Nothing too odd, except that none of the five color terms (red, green, yellow, white and black) returned a monochromatic color sample or selection of colors, they all returned an actual image.
